Hanukkah (חֲנֻכָּה) started at sundown on Saturday, December 8th, 2012. This year’s data was collected on the last day, December 16th, since early years have skewed data in the past (and it was a busy week).

My original 2005 post: 16 Ways to Spell Hanukkah.
Updated annually: 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006

Google Trends: Top five spellings since 2005

Notes on data:

I had no luck with either Google’s or Bing’s APIs this year and eventually I just decided to paste the numbers from searches. Data was collected using a Chrome Incognito session to avoid search engine personalization. I thought I might average Bing & Google’s numbers (see 2012 data sheet), but ended up using only Google’s data since their numbers were more consistent.

Thank you, for this, Joe. I stumbled upon your 2005 post– Sixteen ways to spell Hanukkah –and was fascinated. Not realizing you had updated it, I took it upon myself to just do a search in Google for each of those sixteen. Now I’m fascinated by the significant discrepancies between our numbers. I’m wondering if the difference is *just* because my search is a couple weeks after yours, or if there’s something else to it.

Personally, I like starting with “Ch” but maybe that’s just an age thing (I was born in the 1960’s).

So, not knowing you had *this* post up, I reran the numbers, and put together a comparison with 2006. I’m not your 2012 numbers, since there already on this page. Here’s what I came up with:

    Hanukkah : 8,470,000 hits.
62,000,000 Seems to be the spelling Google uses, but…

    Chanukah : 3,390,000 hits.
9,560,999 The box saying the dates of Hanukkah this year, do not show up on the search above, only on this spelling!

    Hanukah : 862,000 hits.
13,700,000 Corrects me, and shows results instead for Hanukkah.

    Hannukah : 677,000 hits.
16,000,000 Corrects me, and shows results instead for Hanukkah.

    Chanuka : 335,000 hits.
11,600,000 Corrects me, and shows results instead for Chanukah. And it brings up the box it brought up for the Chanukah spelling.

    Chanukkah : 274,000 hits.
    190,000

    Hanuka : 192,000 hits.
15,5000,000 Corrects me, and shows results instead for Hanukkah.

    Channukah : 128,000 hits.
3,640,000 Corrects me, and shows results instead for Chanukah. And shows box.

    Chanukka : 116,000 hits.
