The point holds though, however gracelessly I wrote it. The criminal element of New Orleans did not pack up and get out of town when the evacuation orders were given. Lots of criminals may have stayed, but far more of those stranded were those (including many working poor) with no transportation or nowhere to go, the elderly, the disabled and thousands of children. These everyday folks are the best of this country too. Not just the upper and middle classes. To say the “best” of New Orleans got out is pretty callous.
