It is definitely required that you have a good grinder with your espresso machine! This is not optional. How else can you make day to day changes to your extraction? Besides, the lifespan of ground coffee is minutes, and I doubt that you can burn through a pound in that time!! However, a great mod that allows the use of the 58mm tamp is to use a ridgeless double basket. This basket was actually a mistake in that they forgot the ridge but used it anyway with improved results. The shots are actually improved with this basket.
