FCP Capture from Canon HV10
When attempting to capture footing into FCP from the Canon HV10 camcorder, I got the following message:
It turns out that something in either FCP or the HV10 is very finicky about the camcorder’s power source. Here are a few solutions:
- Close the Log & Capture window, plug the camcorder into wall power, re-open Log & Capture.
- Open iMovieHD. Just opening iMovieHD seems to be enough to kickstart the FireWire connection. iMovieHD was able to read and capture from the camcorder even when FCP couldn’t.
I haven’t had the issue pop up at all when running on wall power. It may be related to a low charge camcorder battery.
Occasionally, when correcting the state of the camcorder, FCP’s Log & Capture window gets stuck and won’t close. I haven’t found any way to close it other than restarting FCP.
hi there,
first of all, i am a complete rookie both with the Hv10 than with FCP. but i am willing to learn. I experienced the same problem and were wondering if you could specify all the audio/video settings I am suppose to set for a correct capture. thanks daniele
I’ve tweaked a few things to better suit the way I work, but my HV10 worked fine (when plugged into wall power) with FCP’s easy setup HDV 1080i60, though I’ve also read about people needing to switch the Device Control Preset (in Audio/Video Settings) to HDV FireWire Basic.
There’s an active user community over at DVInfo: DVInfo: Canon HV10 / HV20 HDV Camcorders They seem helpful and open to all sorts of questions.
I’ve not had problems bringing in 1080i60 to FCP, but rather 1080f24. FCP doesn’t want to recognize the source (the HV10). BTW – the video plays back through the camera screen just fine and recognizes it as 1080f24.
Any ideas as to what settings I should use?
Could you tell us more aout this problem, and if it is fixed? (And if so, how?) I was plannign to get this after reading this positive review, which doesn’t say anything about FCP problems.
Has this “occasional” problem gone away?
Talking about HV20, I am having problems also with log/capture of HV20. I have the easy setup 1080i60 and then do log/capture and get “unable to initiative capture device and device control”. I tried switching the device control to HDV firewire instead of HDV sony firewire but no difference. I know that my camera is set to HDV, the tape is HDV and with the FCP HDV settings, it should communicate with the camera. any immediate help would be wonderful. thanks
Anyone ever find out any fixes for the HV10 Capture problems? I’m getting the same window message reading “unable to locate the following external devices HDV (1440 x 1080i). I tried what was said about changing the Audio/Video settings but it didn’t work…HELP!! I have countless hours of DV tape that I can’t edit!
