Joe Maller - JavaScript

I got into JavaScript because an idea that had been bouncing around my head seemed that it could happen because of the tools JavaScript offered. I was able to learn enough from online sources to acomplish all the ideas that brought me here and to began to undertake the ideas and possibilities that those solutions opened to me.

Several friends and a few students have asked me about JavaScript and where to find information about it. That request was the beginnings of a page that eventually swelled so large it had to split into this and the other pages.

My Snippets & Examples

More examples will be posted whenever I make them. If there is something on my pages you'd like to see explained, write me. If I understand the concept well enough to fake it, I'll write a page about it.

JavaScript Image Replacement - Create roll-overs .

Going Back in a Clients History - Mimic the back button.

JavaScript Links

These are the links I used (and continue to use) to teach myself JavaScript. In order of my preference.

JavaScript-Intro by Voodoo - This is THE site. I have no idea who wrote this, but he got me started. An excellent educational guide, this is better than any book. As a testament to it's value, this site has been translated into about a dozen languages.

JavaScript Authoring Guide 3.0 - The official Netscape Lexicon of JavaScript. It's all here, but this is more of a reference than a guide.

JavaScript Tip of the Week - A good site that puts learning above copy and pasteing.

JavaScript Index - A slow load, but lots of links and snippets.

Javascript Evaluation - Specifying HTML attributes with JavaScript. This is a hugely useful page with NO explanations, maybe I should do one.

Cookies with JavaScript - A good Source for scripting cookies and other cookie information.

JavaScript FAQ - good source of answers, but infrequently updated

JavaWorld - Using JavaScript and Forms - A lenghly article by Gordon McComb, covers forms very well.

JavaScript 411 Home Page - Connected to the FAQ, which is better, but this has good information and some tutorials.

JavaScript Resource Center - Connected to a book, there are a few good things, but hard to sort out.

WinMag JavaScript Resource Center - From Windows Magazine, a few links, and some dumb tricks.

Ask the JavaScript Pro - This site could be so much better, but it has answers to lots of common questions, rarely updated.

TheJavaScript Planet - A good source of snippets.

Gamelan JavaScript - I just don't get the whole Gamelan thing, this is a repository for snippets and games.
