581 Sixth Ave (5th Floor)
For Immediate ReleaseNew York City, September 29, 1997 581 has been extended through October 12. After a sensational opening and continued positive response, the exhibition's closing date has been pushed back two weeks. If you haven't seen it yet, there's still time. Four artists; Nic Blouin, Gilbert Andrew Flores, Heins Kim and Joe Maller were given use of a derelict commercial floor in exchange for cleaning it up. They collaborated to transform the space into a specific venue for the work each of them has been patiently and impatiently developing since coming to New York City. The abandoned wreck that was the fifth floor of 581 Sixth Avenue was given the name 581, a placeholder referring only to what it contains. In 581, all the artist's ideas about the limitations and possibilities of the exhibition space collided, eventually synthesizing four individual visions into one collective physicality. The energy used to transform the space affects the entire exhibition. The results of the artist's combined efforts and the whole show have far exceeded all expectations. Works exhibited for the first time include painting, sculpture, mixed- and new media. The show's hours are Wednesday - Sunday, Noon - 6:00pm and the closing date is now October 12. If you have any questions or would like to discuss the work, please call the space at (917) 815-5281. 581 is located on the fifth floor of 581 Sixth Avenue, between 16th and 17th streets in New York City. There is a public elevator and the exhibition is wheelchair accessible.
