Here, the man who's name I can't remember is holding out a pinch of black anise in a cloth. After rubbing the anise until it is warm and fragrant, one is supposed to inhale the stuff deeply to cure sinus problems and stuffy heads. I don't remember what it smelled like, but it burned like nothing I ever imagined. And my nose didn't run for a week.
